| This phone was made prior to the development of the
modern wall jack. In the days when this phone was installed, they mounted
the phone to the wall directly over the hole where the phone wires come
out and then wired the phone directly to the house wiring. This is
referred to as “hard wired” (as opposed to modular). I have installed a modular back on the phone so it will snap right onto a modern wall jack. Removing the cover of your phone On the front of your phone, near the top and bottom are screws for securing the cover. Loosen these and the cover will swing to the left on hinges. This will give you access to the inside of the phone. Updating the ringer If you didn’t buy your phone from a reputable phone restorer, you may have to update the ringer wiring yourself. This is a very simple job. Find the black wire coming from the ringer. It can be found on a terminal labeled ‘G’. Move it from terminal G to terminal L2. Adjusting the ringer When at it’s maximum, the ringer in this phone can wake the dead. To adjust this, remove the cover of the phone and look at the bells. You will see a screw in the center of each bell. You will also notice that the hole this screw goes through is not exactly centered in the middle of the bell. Loosen the screw enough so you can rotate the bell. The further you move the bell away from the clapper, the softer the volume will be. Modular mounting to existing jack If your phone came equipped with a modular wall jack adapter installed, then you can attach your phone directly to the wall jack. Simply line up the two mounting studs with the corresponding holes in the back of the phone. Make sure the slide jack engages the center receptacle on the wall jack first. Pull down slightly on the phone to lock it in place. Modular mounting to new location If your phone came equipped with a modular wall jack adapter installed, then you can attach your phone directly to a surface mount wall jack. You can get a surface mount jack at the hardware store, or I sell them directly from the web site. Mount the jack to the wall and run a line cord to the nearest telephone jack. To place the phone on the wall jack, line up the two mounting studs with the corresponding holes in the back of the phone. Make sure the slide jack engages the center receptacle on the wall jack first. Pull down slightly on the phone to lock it in place. Wall Mounting – Hard wired This is the cleanest looking installation, though a bit more work. If you currently have a wall jack in place, remove it and remove the wires from it. This will give you a wire to run through the back of the phone. Don’t worry about voltage, telephones are low voltage and will not shock you. Mount the phone securely to the wall using holes in the back plate. Attach the red and green wires to terminals L1 and L2 (either color, either way). The yellow and black wires are not used. |
