| The model 2554 wall phone is one of the most recognized phones of modern
times. Introduced in the mid 1960's, it's still in production today in some form. The
earlier Western Electric models are considered to be the more collectible of this model
phone. In later years (late 1970's to late 1980's) there were other manufacturers in the
USA making these phones. Some of the more popular names of these Western Electric
competitors was ITT, Cortelco, and Stromberg Carlson. Still good quality, they make
a nice solid phone but in collector circles they still lag in value. There is more or less
nothing that can compete with the Western Electric name when it comes to collectibility.
In later years (post 1990) production of these phones moved primarily to China. There's a
few makes of Chinese made 2554's out there that are just okay, but most tend to be pretty
bad when it comes to quality. When buying vintage 2554's, or any vintage TouchTone phone for that matter, you have to make sure that it has a polarity guard installed. Where ever you may end up shopping, be sure to ask the seller if he/she has added a polarity guard if there was none. All the phones I sell always have a polarity guard installed. To learn more about polarity guards, CLICK HERE. Another thing to make sure of is whether they have the modern wall mounting jack on the back. The earlier models didn't come with this and need to have one added. I always send out my wall phones with these jacks included. These phones are also 100% compatible with digital phone service. All the phones I sell have been buffed and cleaned to look like new. I also install a polarity guard when needed, clean keypads and contacts, and update any wiring issues. I also install new cords. Discolored phones have been professionally refinished with Polane, the same material used by the phone companies.
